When LAPD officers arrived in the early evening, they said that addicts and others would likely keep returning to the house.
They also pulled me aside and told me that there would have been a full lab evidence team first thing in the morning, but Open Air Homes only reported that two TVs were stolen which is why only two officers showed up after 6pm.
Also alarming, the renters left copies of my old passport and drivers license (they had taken them from locked storage) on top of the pile of duffel bags.
Eventually (a year later!) I was relieved to find out from federal authorities that there were also identity thieves in the rental, so maybe that wasn't directed at me. It was unclear at the time what it meant!
To try to stop addicts and others from coming, the officers suggested I push it all out to the driveway and put up these signs, which I covered the house in, and I left all of that stuff in the driveway overnight. It was gone by morning.
The signs say:
TAKE YOUR THINGS
THE HOUSE AND GARAGE ARE EMPTY
YOUR THINGS ARE ALL IN THE DRIVEWAY
WARNING
THE POLICE ARE MONITORING THIS PROPERTY
DO NOT COME BACK
